When it comes the Netherlands, big cities like Amsterdam, Den Haag (the Hague), and Rotterdam always come to travellers’ minds. However, you haven’t experienced the real Netherlands if you haven’t paid a visit to a small Dutch town. Here we summarize the top 5 towns you should not miss on your Dutch trip:
1. Delft:
Delft is not only about Delftware, the world-renowned blue and white ceramics. Stuck between two big cities, Rotterdam and Den Haag (the Hague), Delft deserves its place in your itinerary for its rich history. Climb the tower of Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) to get a great view of Rotterdam and Den Haag (the Hague).
2. Lisse:
Lisse is the town where Keukenhof takes place every spring. The enormous tulip field is truly breathtaking, and you can take a boat ride to explore it. Without visiting Keukenhof, your trip to the Netherlands is incomplete.
3. Maastricht:
A stone’s throw away from both Belgium and Germany, Maastricht claims to be the oldest town in the Netherlands. Enjoy a walk through its cobblestoned town centre, and watch the Maas river flow on Saint Servaasbridge.
Do not miss the annual carnival in February or early March, when the town transforms itself into a fantastic party town named “Mestreech”.
4. Edam-Volendam:
Only half an hour away by bus or car from Amsterdam, Volendam looks like a typical Dutch fishermen’s village. Try some smoked eel for lunch.
If you think Volendam is too touristy, Edam is the perfect place for you. Located right next to Volendam, it is a much quieter town with historical town centre, lots of canals, and a traditional cheese market.
5. Kinderdijk:
An authentic historical village with 19 wind mills, Kinderdijk was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk or cycle along the old wind mills to take a close look. It is perfect for your next Instagram photo.
